Bio
Randy Abshier has served as the Head Baseball Coach since 2005, building one of California’s most respected junior college baseball programs through sustained excellence, player development, and a championship-driven culture. Over his tenure, Abshier has compiled an overall CCCAA record of 443 wins, 331 losses, and 2 ties, including a 278–196 PCAC conference record, while leading his program to multiple conference championships and consistent postseason success.
The defining achievement of Abshier’s career came in 2017, when he guided Grossmont College to the CCCAA State Baseball Championship, marking the first state title in program history and the first for San Diego County Community College District baseball. That historic season earned Abshier statewide and regional recognition, including CCCAA Southern California Coach of the Year, Diamond Baseball Pacific Coach of the Year, and ABCA Pacific Region Coach of the Year honors. His teams also captured PCAC Championships in 2016 and 2017, with Abshier being named PCAC Coach of the Year in both seasons. Under his leadership, Grossmont has claimed CCCAA Regional Championships in 2006, 2016, 2017, and 2023, CCCAA Super Regional Championships in 2016 and 2017, and has made numerous sectionals, regional, and super regional appearances.
Beyond wins and championships, Abshier’s legacy is defined by player development and advancement. He has coached 67 PCAC All-Conference selections, five PCAC Players of the Year, four All-Americans, six Academic All-Americans, and one Rawlings Gold Glove recipient. His program has produced 11 MLB Draft selections, three Major League Baseball players, and 35 professional baseball alumni. In more than two decades of coaching, Abshier considers his proudest accomplishment to be the advancement of student-athletes, with over 150 players earning scholarships and transferring to continue their academic and athletic careers.
Abshier began building his coaching foundation in 1995 as the head baseball coach at Marian Catholic High School. During the 1995 and 1996 seasons, Marian Catholic was ranked No. 1 in the CIF Division 3A Playoffs and fifth in the California State rankings. In just two seasons, Abshier compiled a 47–12 overall record and led the program to the school’s first CIF Division 3A Baseball Championship, firmly establishing Marian Catholic as a statewide powerhouse. In recognition of his impact and success, he was inducted into the Marian Catholic (Mater Dei Catholic) High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.
Before arriving at Grossmont College, Abshier served as the Pitching Coach at Southwestern Community College for four seasons. During his tenure, Southwestern pitchers won more than 70 games and the program consistently contended for Pacific Coast Conference championships and state playoff appearances.
In the summer of 1997, Abshier coached the Pueblo Chieftains, a semi-professional club based in Pueblo, Colorado. In the franchise’s inaugural season, the Chieftains earned more than 20 wins while competing against teams from the Colorado State, Jayhawk, and Mink Leagues. The following summer, Abshier was named Pitching Coach for the Barona Stars, a semi-professional team in San Diego, California. Under his leadership, the Stars captured the Western Regional Conference championship and earned a berth in the National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series in Wichita, Kansas, finishing 13th nationally.
Abshier has had the privilege of working alongside renowned pitching expert Dr. Tom House and was a certified Functional Fitness Trainer as well as a pitching instructor for the National Pitching Association (NPA). He has lectured and instructed at camps across Alaska, California, Colorado, and Utah, and has provided professional instruction to numerous Major League and Minor League pitchers nationwide. His client list includes Mark Prior (Chicago Cubs), Matt Hensley (Anaheim Angels), Bob Scanlon (Houston Astros), Sean O’Sullivan (Anaheim Angles), and Jeff Kastens (New York Yankees). In addition, Abshier served as an associate scout for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays organization.
Academically, Abshier holds a Master of Science in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University, a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction from National University, a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education with an emphasis in Athletic Training from San Diego State University, and an Associate of Arts in General Studies from Southwestern Community College.
